Exhaust fumes pour out of the two exhaust pipes of a car in a workshop.

Regulations for protection against exhaust fumes in the workplace

Health risks from exhaust fumes in enclosed spaces

Pollutants accumulate rapidly in halls, depots and workshops when combustion and diesel engines are running. These include carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NO/NO₂), benzene, other hydrocarbons and soot particles. Even brief exposure can lead to irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract, headaches, dizziness and circulatory problems. The WHO classifies diesel exhaust gases as carcinogenic - repeated or prolonged exposure increases the risk of chronic respiratory and cardiovascular diseases as well as cancer.

Ultrafine particles (UFP) are particularly critical: they are so small that they can penetrate deep into the lungs, enter the bloodstream and cause inflammation and cell damage. In the long term, this promotes genetic changes and tumor development. There is also a safety risk: certain exhaust gas components are flammable - without controlled capture and discharge, the risk of ignition events increases.

Legal requirements for the protection of your employees

Important regulations include the guidelines recommended by the industry agreement on exhaust gas extraction:

  • Exhaust gases from diesel engines (TRGS 554)
  • Ordinance on the Protection of Hazardous Substances (Hazardous Substances Ordinance GefStoffV)
  • Risk assessment for activities involving hazardous substances (TRGS 400)
  • Determination and assessment of hazards during activities involving hazardous substances: Inhalative exposure (TRGS 402)
  • Occupational exposure limits (TRGS 900)
  • List of carcinogenic, mutagenic or reprotoxic substances (TRGS 905)
  • Workplace ventilation - Ventilation measures (BGR 121)
  • Vehicle maintenance (BGR 157)

Clean air thanks to effective extraction technology

Our systems capture exhaust gases directly at the source - the exhaust pipe - and discharge them to the outside in a controlled manner. This allows you to comply with legal requirements and sustainably improve the air quality in the workplace. Optional integrated filter systems additionally clean the hall air and protect the environment. The result: a healthy indoor climate, greater well-being and noticeably more productivity.
