Exhaust Fume Extraction for Railway Depots: Case Study SNCF 2

Industry: Railway depots and maintenance halls

The customer

The Société nationale des chemins de fer français “SNCF”, is the national French railway, responsible for passenger and freight transport on the rails in France and for the maintenance of the routes and vehicles. Blaschke Umwelttechnik has been a partner for exhaust gas extraction solutions in numerous maintenance depots of SNCF since 2008.

The task

In 2014, the SNCF introduced the first vehicles of a new vehicle type. The Regiolis is a “bi-mode” train of the newer generation by the French manufacturer Alstom. The Régiolis trainsets are operated with two different drive versions: as an electrical trainset and a dual-power train set (electrical and diesel-electrical).

This modern train type us serviced, among other places, in the equipment centres of SNCF in Toulouse, Granville and Mulhouse in newly constructed combo maintenance depots. Blaschke Umwelttechnik was given the assignment to develop and install an effective extraction system for DME pollutants that are hazardous to the health. The systems had to meet the following requirements: easy to operate – integration into in the existing structural conditions without major architectural changes – built-in bridge cranes and collapsible overhead wires were to continue to be used in alternating operation – high safety standards in the combo operation must be guaranteed. In collaboration with SNCF, Blaschke Umwelttechnik designed a system version that was optimally adapted to these requirements.

Our solution:

Our very flexible RailCombi extraction system perfectly meets all of the high demands of our client SNCF. We developed it especially for combo depots in which both electrical as well as diesel/electrical vehicles can also be serviced.

For the operation of this exhaust system we have taken high safety standards into account: particularly for the combined usage of the collapsible overhead wiring on two adjacent platforms of different operating types. Our overhead wire safety unit continuously monitors the end positions and the parking positions of the capture units. The system cannot be operated on this platform when the overhead wiring is extended. This ensures the highest level of safety for depot employees.

The RailCombi system is installed on a work platform between two train tracks. Four, six or more platform units can be remote controlled at each point via the maintenance platform. The capture hoods lower securely at a great height and move precisely onto the exhaust pipe. The hazardous diesel exhaust gases are effectively extracted out and cannot reach the hall air.
