Extraction system for the Hitachi Rail Europe deports

Branch: Railway depots

Our customer

Hitachi Rail Europe designs and manufactures state-of-the-art rail vehicles: from commuter trains to metros and intercity trains. The company builds on its many years of experience as a leading manufacturer of high-speed trains such as the Shinkansen for the Japanese market.

The company developed its new Class 800/801 train - which won a design award - for the British Intercity Express Program (IEP). The fast and comfortable intercity trains are to be used on both the Great Western Main Line and the East Coast Main Line in England from 2018.

Our task

The modern Hitachi Class 800/801 trains are produced and maintained in England. The trains are built both with electric drive and in a bi-mode variant with electric and diesel drive.

The first maintenance depots are built in Bristol and Doncaster. Another existing depot is converted. Blaschke Umwelttechnik was commissioned by the general contractor to plan and install the exhaust extraction systems for these modern depots on 2 to 4 tracks. In each case, trains with 5 to 10 wagons and several railcars must be able to be extracted.

Our solution

The optimum extraction system for our customer Hitachi Rail Europe: our automatic, stationary RailPoint system. This economical and efficient solution is particularly suitable for facilities in which railcar trains or specific train configurations are regularly maintained.

The RailPoint system has height-adjustable extraction hoods. Flexible high-temperature hoses are fitted to the stationary extraction units, allowing the hood to be raised and lowered. The hood is placed directly on the overhead exhaust of the railcar and captures all harmful diesel exhaust gases safely and cleanly. Once the extraction process is complete and before the overhead power lines are switched on, the extraction hoods are raised to the safe upper parking position.

In our reference example, the extraction system is controlled via state-of-the-art touchscreen panels and/or radio remote control. All functions are monitored and reported to the personal protection system and the overhead line control system.

In 2014, Blaschke Umwelttechnik installed the stationary exhaust gas extraction system at Hitachi Rail Europe's London maintenance depot. The depots in Bristol and Doncaster were also equipped with extraction systems in 2015.
